1
Understand WiFi channels
On 2.4GHz, channels 1, 6 and 11 are the only non-overlapping ones. On 5GHz there are many more non-overlapping options.
-
2
Scan for the least congested channel
Use a WiFi analyser app (e.g. WiFi Analyzer on Android, or Wireless Diagnostics on Mac) to see which channels nearby routers are using.
-
3
Log in to the router admin panel
Open your gateway IP in a browser and sign in.
-
4
Change the channel
Find Wireless Settings or WiFi Settings and change the channel from Auto to your chosen channel. Save and let the router restart.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use Auto channel selection?
Auto is a reasonable default but routers don't always pick the best channel. Manual selection after scanning is more reliable.
How often should I change the channel?
Only when you notice interference or a new neighbour's router moves onto your channel. You don't need to change it routinely.
