Strict or Moderate NAT type causes connection issues, party chat problems and longer matchmaking times. Here's how to get Open NAT.

1
Understand NAT types
Open NAT = no restrictions, connects to everyone. Moderate NAT = some restrictions, can't host. Strict NAT = heavily restricted, long matchmaking, can't join many lobbies.

2
Give your console a static IP
Log into the router admin panel and create a DHCP reservation for your console's MAC address so its local IP never changes.
-
3
Forward the game's ports
Find the port numbers your console or game needs (check the game's support page or your console maker's site). Add port forwarding rules in the router pointing to your console's static IP.

4
Enable UPnP as an alternative
UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) lets your console open its own ports automatically. Find it in the router's Advanced settings and enable it. Check NAT type again in your console's network settings.

Use DMZ as a last resort
If port forwarding doesn't work, placing the console in the DMZ gives guaranteed Open NAT. See the trade-offs in the DMZ guide.
