How to Reset a Forgotten Router Password

Restore admin access with a factory reset, then secure the router again.

Updated 2026

  1. 1

    Try the defaults first

Before resetting, try the default username and password on the matching brand or IP page — many routers still use them.

  2. 2

    Locate the reset button

Find the small recessed Reset button, usually on the back or underside of the router.

  3. 3

    Hold for 10–15 seconds

With the router powered on, press and hold the button until the lights blink, then release.

  4. 4

    Log in with defaults

After it reboots, sign in with the factory username and password, then set a new admin password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a reset delete my WiFi settings?
Yes — a factory reset clears your WiFi name, password and all custom settings, so you'll need to set them up again.
Reset vs reboot — what's the difference?
A reboot just restarts the router. A reset erases all settings and returns it to factory defaults.
