How to Block a Device on Your Network

Remove an unwanted device from your WiFi using MAC address filtering or the router's access control list.

Updated 2026

  1. 1

    Identify the device

Log in to your router and open the connected-devices list to find the device's MAC address and hostname.

  2. 2

Option 1 — Use Access Control / MAC filtering

Find Access Control, MAC Filter, or Wireless MAC Filtering in the admin menu. Add the device's MAC address to the block list.

  3. 3

Option 2 — Remove and change the password

The quickest method: change your WiFi password. All devices (including the one you want to block) will disconnect. Reconnect only your own devices.

  4. 4

    Option 3 — DHCP block

Some routers let you set a device to deny in the DHCP client list, preventing it from getting an IP address.

  5. 5

    Save and verify

Apply the rule. The blocked device should lose connectivity within seconds or on its next connection attempt.

  6. 6

    Monitor for re-attempts

Check the router log or connected-devices list periodically to confirm the device stays off.
