How to Check Which Devices Are on Your Network

See every device connected to your router to spot unauthorised users or identify unknown devices.

Updated 2026

  1. 1

Log in to your router admin page

Open your gateway IP in a browser and sign in.

  2. 2

    Find the connected-devices list

Look for DHCP Client List, Connected Devices, or Device List — usually under LAN or Status.

  3. 3

    Review the list

Note the hostname, IP address, and MAC address of each device. Unknown entries may be neighbours or unauthorised devices.

  4. 4

    Identify unknown devices

Cross-reference MAC addresses using a MAC lookup tool (the first 6 characters identify the manufacturer).

  5. 5

Use a network scanner as an alternative

Apps like Fing (iOS/Android) or nmap -sn 192.168.1.0/24 on a computer give a detailed device list.

  6. 6

    Act on unauthorised devices

If you spot an intruder, change your WiFi password immediately and consider enabling MAC address filtering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I see more devices than I expected?
Smart-home devices, smart TVs, tablets and gaming consoles all count. Each band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) may list a device separately.
Can I name devices so I recognise them?
Many routers let you assign friendly names (hostnames) to devices in the DHCP reservation or device-list section.
