Troubleshooting

Can My Roommate See My Internet History?

If you share a router, your roommate can't easily see your browsing — but whoever controls the router can check logs. Here's what's actually visible.

Updated 2026

  1. 1

Other devices can't see your traffic directly

On a normal WiFi network, devices are isolated from each other. Your roommate's laptop can't directly intercept your web traffic — routers don't broadcast traffic to all devices.

  2. 2

The router admin can see DNS logs

Whoever has the router admin password can log into the panel and see the DNS history — which domains every device visited. Not the content, just the site names.

  3. 3

    HTTPS protects your content

Even in the router logs, HTTPS traffic shows only the domain (e.g. reddit.com) — not specific posts, searches or messages.

  4. 4

If your roommate owns the router

They have access to the admin panel and DNS logs. Use a VPN to encrypt your traffic so even domain names are hidden.

  5. 5

    Get your own router

If privacy is a concern, plug your own router into the dorm or home network. Your traffic stays on your private network.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone on the same WiFi see my passwords?
Not on HTTPS sites (which is almost everything now). On unencrypted HTTP sites it's theoretically possible with packet sniffing tools, but rare and difficult. Always check for the padlock.
Does using mobile data instead of WiFi help?
Yes — mobile data bypasses the shared router entirely. Your traffic goes through your carrier, not the shared network.
