How to Make WiFi Faster for Gaming

Gaming on WiFi doesn't have to mean lag. These steps will get you the best possible wireless connection for online games.

Updated 2026

  1. 1

    Use the 5GHz band

Switch your gaming device to the 5GHz WiFi band — it's less congested and faster than 2.4GHz. Check your router's network list for a _5G or _5GHz variant.

  2. 2

    Move closer to the router

Every metre of distance and every wall between you and the router adds latency. Get as close as practical or use a powerline adapter to run Ethernet through the wall.

  3. 3

Set up QoS (Quality of Service)

Log into your router admin panel and find QoS or Traffic Priority settings. Set your gaming console or PC as high priority so game traffic gets bandwidth first.

  4. 4

Use a wired connection if possible

Ethernet beats WiFi every time for gaming — lower ping, zero packet loss, no interference. Even a powerline adapter is more stable than WiFi.

  5. 5

    Reboot the router weekly

Routers accumulate stale connections over time. A weekly restart keeps latency low.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5GHz always better for gaming?
Yes, if you're within range. 5GHz has lower latency and less interference than 2.4GHz. Beyond 10–15 metres through walls, 2.4GHz may actually be more stable.
Does my router affect gaming performance?
Yes. Older or budget routers have slower processors and can't handle many devices without lag spikes. A gaming router with QoS makes a real difference in a busy household.
