Wired vs Wireless for Gaming — Which Is Better?

Ethernet wins for gaming — always. But if running a cable isn't possible, here's how to get WiFi as close to wired as possible.

Updated 2026

  1. 1

    Why wired is better

Ethernet gives you consistent low ping, zero packet loss and no interference from neighbours or appliances. A wired connection to the same router will always outperform WiFi in stability.

  2. 2

    Typical difference in numbers

Wired: 1–5ms local ping, 0% packet loss. WiFi: 5–30ms local ping, occasional packet loss — small numbers that add up in fast-paced games.

  3. 3

Can't run a cable? Use powerline adapters

Powerline adapters send data through your home's electrical wiring. Not as fast as direct Ethernet but far more stable than WiFi. Plug one in near the router, one near your console.

  4. 4

    If you must use WiFi

5GHz band, router nearby, QoS enabled, and no downloads running in the background. A WiFi 6 router and adapter significantly close the gap with wired.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the difference noticeable in casual gaming?
In slower games like RPGs or turn-based games — not really. In shooters, racing games or fighting games where every millisecond counts — absolutely.
Does a gaming router make WiFi as good as wired?
It gets much closer, especially with WiFi 6 and QoS. But a direct Ethernet connection is still more reliable.
