Can School WiFi See What You Do?
School networks have more monitoring capability than home routers. Here's exactly what they can see — and it's more than most students realise.

1
Domain-level traffic
The school's network logs every domain your device connects to — whether you're in incognito or not. They can see reddit.com, instagram.com, gaming sites, etc.
-
2
Content filtering and blocking
Most schools use DNS filtering or proxy systems (like Cisco Umbrella or Smoothwall) that actively block certain categories and log attempts to access them.
-
3
SSL inspection (HTTPS)
Some schools use SSL inspection, which decrypts and re-encrypts HTTPS traffic. This means they can potentially see the full page URLs and content — not just the domain. Your browser may show a warning or a different certificate.

Device vs network monitoring
If the device is school-owned, they may also have MDM (Mobile Device Management) software installed that monitors activity beyond just the network.

What a VPN does on school WiFi
A VPN hides your traffic from the network's DNS logs and content filter — but the school may be able to detect and block VPN connections. Some schools explicitly prohibit VPN use.
