How to Set Up a WiFi Extender / Repeater

Extend your WiFi coverage to dead zones by correctly placing and configuring a wireless range extender.

Updated 2026

  1. 1

    Choose the right location

Place the extender halfway between the router and the dead zone — it must still receive a strong signal from the router to rebroadcast it.

  2. 2

    Power on the extender

Plug it in and wait for it to boot up fully (indicator lights stabilise).

  3. 3

Connect to the extender's setup network

On a phone or laptop, connect to the WiFi network broadcast by the extender (usually named after the brand).

  4. 4

    Open the setup page

Open a browser and go to the extender's setup address (commonly 192.168.10.1 or via an app).

  5. 5

    Select your home WiFi

Choose your main WiFi network from the list and enter the password.

  6. 6

    Name the extended network

You can use the same SSID as your router for seamless roaming, or a different name (e.g. HomeWiFi_EXT) to control which network you join.

  7. 7

    Test coverage

Walk to the previously dead zone and check signal strength and speed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a WiFi extender halve my speed?
A single-band extender that receives and transmits on the same frequency will roughly halve throughput. A dual-band extender using one band as a backhaul avoids this.
What's the difference between an extender and a mesh system?
Mesh systems use dedicated backhaul links and intelligent roaming — they provide better speed and seamless handoff compared to traditional extenders.
