How to Tell If Someone Is Using Your WiFi

If your internet feels slow or you suspect an intruder, check your router's connected device list. Here's how to find out and what to do.

Updated 2026

  1. 1

    Check the router's device list

Log into the router admin panel (open your gateway IP, e.g. http://192.168.1.1). Look for Connected Devices or DHCP Client List.

  2. 2

    Identify every device

Go through each entry. Devices show a hostname and MAC address. Compare with your known devices — phones, laptops, TVs, smart plugs.

  3. 3

    Look for warning signs

High data usage at odd hours, unknown device names, or more devices than you own are red flags.

  4. 4

    Kick the intruder off

Change your WiFi password immediately. Every device, including the unauthorised one, will be disconnected and must re-enter the new password.

  5. 5

    Prevent it happening again

Use WPA3 or WPA2 with a strong, unique password. Set up a guest network for visitors so they never have your main password.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone use my WiFi without appearing in the device list?
It's rare but possible if they use a static IP and avoid DHCP. A proper network scan with a tool like Fing catches these too.
Will changing my WiFi password disconnect all my own devices too?
Yes — you'll need to reconnect all your devices with the new password. It's a small inconvenience for good security.
